Frequently Asked Questions

Airsoft Guns

  • What is a ‘BB’ in Airsoft?

Traditionally ‘BB’ is short for Ball Bearing, though in Airsoft terms a BB is made from plastic instead of metal. Most Airsoft guns fire 6mm BBs, though some fire 8mm BBs. The standard weight for game BBs is .2g, heavier BBs are used in some cases (usually sniper rifles), which travel slightly slower but are more accurate over longer ranges when used with the higher powered sniper rifles.

  • What is an AEG Airsoft gun?

Automatic Electric Gun. The standard name by which the vast majority of Airsoft guns are known. AEGs use a battery attached to a motor to drive the piston which provides the air pressure requires to fire BBs.

  • What do Airsoft guns fire?

Ammo in airsoft is inexpensive to buy. This makes a day out playing Airsoft affordable without having to be careful with the trigger, allowing you to enjoy the action and forget about running out of ammo! Most AEGs can carry up to 300 rounds in high capacity magazines, and most players carry a small bottle with them while playing to reload.

  • What is it like being shot with an Airsoft Gun?

BBs do not break up or leave coloured marks so an honour system is used to register hits. Players raise their hands and call out “hit” to indicate that they have been shot (a team of marshals will be on site at all times to uphold our standards of fair play). Being hit by a BB fired from an Airsoft gun can be comparable to being flicked or pinched very hard, and if you are hit on a thinly covered area you will definitely notice it. However, it doesn’t leave permanent marks and there is no lasting pain past the initial sting.

  • When is your next game? How often do you run them?
  • What type of games do you run?

Since we have bunkers and open areas, dense and sparse woodland, hills and valleys and close-action areas with lots of cover we’re lucky to be able to effectively run a whole range of game types. We specialise in games that fans of FPS games like Call of Duty and Battlefield will be familiar with. If you don’t know what they are, don’t worry! The basics are simple objective oriented games (capture the flag, protect the VIP, hold a certain area, etc.) that benefit from fast respawns and lots of action. Those with a tactical head will find themselves invaluable to the team when planning how best to achieve the objectives and picking out weak points in the opponents’ strategies. Each game day will be themed around a storyline. For example, you might find yourself playing the part of a U.S. tactical squad clashing against mercenaries hired by an African warlord – or you might prefer to join the mercenaries!

  • Can I play with the people I came with?

If you come with friends you’ll be playing on the same team as them, so don’t worry about being separated. Players are friendly and inclusive, so if you want to come alone or in a small group you can be sure to find plenty of people to join when you’re assigned to a team.

Most games run with two teams, each being given objectives to achieve. Marshals are provided to ensure fairness and safety and sometimes Marshals will join the playing teams to offer backup or for specific event scenarios.

Special event days may be subject to special team requirements. You’ll be notified of any special rules well before the event.

  • What are ‘Medic Rules’ in Airsoft?

This term is a blanket term applied to either individuals or special rules which allow ‘healing’ fellow players during the game. This is often applied as a special game rule. You might hear people ask about “medic rules?” or “medic game?”, they are referring to this rule.

  • Can I take photos/videos during the day?

Yes you can. Be aware however that any equipment you bring is your responsibility, if your £500 Pentax is damaged by a BB in the lens or you drop it in the mud, that’s not Frontier’s responsibility – You Have Been Warned.

  • What happens if it rains?

You’ll get wet. Use common sense, bring a towel or change of clothes if you think you’ll need it.

  • Do I need to bring a radio?

No, although many players find that having a radio helps a great deal, some more long-term players will invest in a good radio headset and will agree a channel with the rest of the team on the day.

  • How long do games last?

Games will run up to 60 minutes (but not over) and we will be keeping score throughout the day with prizes for the winners of various games and special awards for certain actions during each game. Generally you can expect to play between 5 and 7 individual games during a game day.

  • What happens when I get shot?

When you play, you will get shot; it’ll happen at some point. In most games when you are hit you are only ‘dead’ for a short period of time before being allowed to rejoin the game. The games we play encourage the use of teamwork to get the objectives completed, so ‘death’ in the games is only a temporary penalty! Don’t worry, you won’t miss out.

Airsoft players who play online FPS games will recognise the concept of ‘respawn points’. When you are ‘killed’ you will not be able to shoot or interact with anything and you will go directly to a repawn point where, depending on the rules of the game, you’ll either have to wait for a short time before rejoining the game or rejoin the game immediately. Some games use Medic rules which allow a specific player to ‘heal’ others in the field of play. Rules for being hit, respawns, death, healing and medics will always be explained to you during the game briefing and any Marshal will be able to help you out if you’re unsure.

  • Do I need to wear face protection?

Facemasks or goggles must worn to protect the eyes. Please let us know in advance if you will need these so we can make sure there is a spare set available. Under 18s are required by law to wear full face masks. Over 18s may chose to wear only ballistic eye protection (normal glasses will not be adequate protection).

Be aware that, in rare cases, Airsoft BBs have been known to damage teeth and cause injuries to the thin skin on the face, so please be aware that wearing only goggles is done at your own risk. You Have Been Warned!

If you are unsure about any aspect of safety, either before or during the game, we encourage you to ask a Marshal or contact us for more information.
