The Verunga Region of the Congo
The Congo has long been synonymous with dense, dark jungle and unseen horrors. Even in the modern world it’s still not a place that’s easy to explore and chart.
Although politically the Congo is more stable now that it has been for some considerable time, to go off the beaten track is still considered quite deadly. The Verunga region is the darkest and most dense part of the jungle, long known to local inhabitants as ‘The place of the dead’ because it’s been said that many animals go there to die when they reach the end of their lives.
Many western teams have gone into this region to explore and to find undiscovered plants and animals. Few have met with success and some have never returned – adding to the Verunga region’s intrigue more than acting as a warning to others.
Recently this area has been the site of a rather unusual battle of a different sort – a legal one. Both Protekorp and the Lyall-Carthum Conglomerate are deeply interested in the area, and have been fighting a covert war for the eight years to be the only corporation to gain access. Though exactly what is so important in this area, no-one outside the highest ranks of each organisation know for sure.
